Breastfeeding while Traveling? Possible, with These Easy Tips

When you’re a mother always on the go, traveling from one place to another with your baby is highly probable. Traveling with your baby will surely burden you to have more added tasks and that includes being able to breastfeed or store your breast milk while on the go.

If you are boarding a plane, make sure that you adhere to the different regulations when it comes to carry-on liquids. There is a standard 12-ounce rule that applies for all liquids brought inside the plane. Passengers are only required to carry with them one piece of a 12-ounce plastic bag to fit all their liquids in. If you are carrying your child’s milk in a bottle, make sure that it is in accordance to the 12-ounce rule.

If you want to bring in more breast milk in your luggage, the good news is that you can store as much as you want in your check-in luggage. Recent studies show that frozen breast milk can withstand any kind of traveling condition and still keep its natural goodness intact. This means that all the vitamins and minerals will still be made available to your baby once the plane lands. There are also studies saying that breast milk stored in room temperature can last up to 8 hours, so you don’t have to worry about the milk going bad.

When you’re traveling with breast milk, remember these rules: if you freeze the breast milk and thaw it, it can last up to 24 hours provided that it is refrigerated. On the other hand, fresh milk stored in a clean and dry container can last in your refrigerator for 7 days or less.

If you really want to be sure, you can pre-ship your breast milk to your destination. You can opt to have it shipped with dry ice to maintain its freshness during the trip.
