Breastmilk and How it Will Solve All Your Problems
As first time parents, I think my husband and I really thought that with my breastfeeding and our version of attachment parenting, we had it all figured out. We were done. There was nothing left for us to do as parents except drive the child to his job at preschool, make sure he had clothing and food and smile proudly as he went off to make the world an extraordinarily better place with his presence. Then he turned four.
The development of will in a child changes everything. It is when “no” becomes a Top Ten Words to Say for Any Reason and Let’s See if Mommy Picks It Up Again is the favored game. Children are like brilliant, mad scientists and the world is their laboratory. Anything they do is an experiment and is precisely how they discover limits, boundaries and their own abilities. It is also how they come to grips with independence and being a separate person from mommy.
Mommy’s milk truly is liquid gold. It lines infants’ GI tracts with immunities, it comes in the premixed perfection of fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and antibodies to germs that mom and baby come in contact with. Its expression provides mom with needed hormones to help her stay calm. It is what we are supposed to do. That, however, is it. Since it is what we are supposed to do, we do not get extra credit for doing it. Children get the right start on becoming who they are meant to be, but not more. It is only better than everything else.
Parenting merely begins with making the right choice to give your child breastmilk. The road after that journey will still be rife with doubt, mishaps, arguments and worry. When breastfeeding your child, bank the moments when you gaze at one another like no one else exists. Tuck away for later the times when you are able to calm a frantic toddler by offering to nurse. While an extended nursing relationship you have with your child can help ease the transition from babyhood to toddlerhood and beyond, it will not provide you with all the tools you need going forward. Find ways to solidify the bond with your child outside of breastfeeding even while still doing it. Create other special moments and discover alternative methods to deal with the difficulties of growing up independent of nursing. In doing so, you will start the journey with your child that lasts far longer than the journey of nursing. You will be on the road of life.
