Handling Breastfeeding as a Caregiver

There will come a time when a mother will return to her normal routine after taking time off to give birth and this is where caregiver comes is. Of course, a mother who chose to breastfeed her baby should not stop the feeding process just because a caregiver is now in the picture. The mother can still continue to expel and store breast milk to make sure that her baby will still be given the best kind of milk available even if the mother is not around and a caregiver stands in place.

For caregivers out there in this same situation, you don’t have to panic about the whole breastfeeding situation. To put yourself at ease, here are things that you need to know in order to handle breastfeeding issues.

You might be used to seeing regular milk which is very much different in consistency and texture compared to breast milk. Regular milk is smooth and whitish while breast milk can oftentimes be yellowish and since it is not homogenized, it can separate and coagulate. If this happens, all you have to do is to heat the milk and mix it.

Normally, a baby who is three months or younger would need 2-4 ounces of milk and babies over 3 months will often require 4-6 ounces of breast milk. But again it varies depending on the baby, what you can do is to offer the baby a small amount of breast milk at first and then you can take it from there.

If you are giving care to a baby, it is common that the mother will have ample amounts of frozen breast milk for you to use. If the milk is frozen, it is advisable that you thaw it naturally by putting it in the refrigerator. But if you need a faster thawing process, you can have the container under a stream of cool, running water.

Never thaw the frozen milk in the microwave, this can really mess up the nutrients and natural elements that is found in breast milk. You also have to remember that thawed milk should be used up after 24 hours. You can’t freeze milk, thaw it and then freeze it again.
