How to Deal With Oversupply of Milk?
For all breastfeeding mothers out there, the number one concern that you might have is that you will not give the quantity of milk that your baby needs. But what if you don’t experience this? What if there is oversupply in your breast milk, how do you deal with it?
The first thing that you have to do if you think you are having an oversupply of milk is to look at your baby and see if he or she is very fussy, crying, pulling off your breast and hiccupping. These might be signs that you are giving him or her oversupply of breast milk. Other signs will include: green and watery stools, red and sore bottoms and there is a possibility that the baby gags or sputters when there is an immediate jet of milk sprayed too quickly in his mouth.
As for mothers, the symptoms of having too much milk is characterized by engorged breasts or plugged ducts.
Now, lets discuss the causes of oversupply. It can usually be caused by a combination of letdown reflex and milk imbalance. To further understand milk imbalance, you must know that the milk you produce can either be hind milk or fore milk. Fore milk or sweet milk is produced early on in the breastfeeding process and is higher in lactose and lower in fat while hind milk is higher in fat. The normal production of milk is 5 ounces. But if a mother is experiencing oversupply, she might produce lower levels of sweet milk as compared to hind milk.
If you are experiencing oversupply, you can do the following tips to cope with it: offer only one breast for feeding at a time, don’t offer the second breast if he or she doesn’t want it, relaxing during the breastfeeding process will also help as it slows down the discharge of milk and try to avoid pumping your breast to produce more milk unless it is needed.
