Breastfeeding While on Birth Control, Is it Possible?

It is a likely occurrence that mothers will breastfeed their babies while they are taking birth control pills simultaneously. It is common knowledge that whatever the mother intakes, the baby will also get a portion of it through the breast milk. To know what is the real deal between birth control and breastfeeding, here are things that you need to know if you are planning on doing both at the same time.

Okay, so here’s the deal. The thing is, breastfeeding mothers are protected against pregnancy 98% of the time given the following circumstances: the mother is continuously breastfeeding her baby who is not more than 6 months of age and the mother has not yet started her period. Another important consideration is that the mother should be exclusively breastfeeding her baby, meaning there is no use of formula milk or even water.

But other than the above mentioned circumstances, the mother is not safe from the risk of pregnancy and this is where birth control comes in. Experts say that it depends on what kind of birth control is undertaken in determining what are the potential effects on the baby.

First off, hormonal birth control which includes being given estrogen should be avoided during breastfeeding. Breastfeeding mothers should opt to have non-hormonal birth control methods.

Using a condom is a good birth control method that you can use if you are still breastfeeding. A condom will minimize the risk of pregnancy as well as STDs but the best thing about this method is that it won’t pose a direct effect on the mother or the child. Other methods that you should also look into are diaphragms, IUDs and natural family planning methods.

Permanent methods like vasectomy and tubal ligation have no known effect on the breastfeeding and are deemed safe also.

There are some hormonal methods that you can take as birth control and can even increase your milk supply, but to be on the safe side you should consider going to your ob-gyn for a consultation before you use any hormonal birth control methods.
