New Study Shows That Hospital Practices Have Impact on Breastfeeding Rates
A study conducted by a researcher from the Boston University School of Public Health shows that hospital practices have great impact on breastfeeding rates.
Specifically, if the hospitals are giving the newborn babies formula milk, water or pacifier, this act will greatly reduce the chances of the mother being successful in exclusively breastfeeding their baby.
Headed by Eugene Declercq, PhD, the research discovered that there is a huge disparity which separates the mothers who are willing to breastfeed in the first week and those who actually turn this goal into reality. The disparity is 20%, with the mothers who are willing to breastfeed standing at 70% and those who are turning the breastfeeding goal into a reality, 50%.
The study also divulged that much of this disparity is also caused by the hospital practices that the mother gave birth in. For example, if a hospital practice dictates that it should give pacifiers, water or formula milk to the babies, it will be hard for the mother to breastfeed exclusively.
The sad thing is this is all happening in hospitals which are known to be advocates of breastfeeding but at the same time they don’t know that their very practices are affecting the breastfeeding rates negatively.
On the other hand, a hospital practice that might affect a mother’s breastfeeding practice positively is if the hospital readily supports breastfeeding and has programs which will help the mother jumpstart this process.
