Rhode Island Passes Breastfeeding Bill
Last March 1, 2009, Rhode Island lawmakers passed and signed a breastfeeding bill which states that women can breastfeed or bottle-feed her child in any public place.
This particular law is derived from a previous bill that women are exempted from the ‘indecent exposure’ act while she is breastfeeding in public, but does not give the mothers the explicit right to breastfeed in public.
This is actually a good sign that all the mothers, babies, state health officials and state will benefit from. As for both mother and baby, they will both receive health benefits from breastfeeding. For the health officials, this will mean that they can now staunchly promote the benefits of breastfeeding to the public and at the same time have the backing of the state. For the state, this would cut down their allocated budget for the health programs of the state because of the approval of this law.
In connection with this law, last 2003 with an initiative from the Physicians’ Committee for Breastfeeding in Rhode Island, the state also passed a law requiring all employers to have a special place for mothers who want to breastfeed or pump breast milk in their office.
The passing of this Rhode Island bill will hopefully inspire other states to push for breastfeeding in their places.
