Breastfeeding and the Working Mother
We all know that this scenario is inevitable, after your maternity leave and caring for your newborn baby, you have to go back to work and back to reality.
But the breastfeeding should not stop even after you get back to work. You should still continue to do it for the benefit of your baby. There are many issues that need to be addressed once you decide that you want to continue the process even if you are working. Put all your worries aside and read along to learn how to juggle both tasks at the same time.
You can opt to have ‘pumping time’ in between your breaks when you are at work. Talk to your immediate supervisor about this setup and see if he is agreeable to it. You can use this time to pump breast milk to be stored for future use.
Contact your lactation consultant or your doctor if any problems will arise. A specialist like a lactation consultant can help you out because it is his specialization. Whereas your doctor can give a general idea about the problem.
Purchase a dependable and portable breast pump. Medela offers many styles that you can choose from. Portability is one factor that you have to consider because you need to bring it to work and back at home.
One thing that you need to think of is the storage process of the breast milk. Research on milk storage guidelines and keep in mind that mature milk and frozen milk have different storage times.
Another thing that you need to entertain is the criticism that you might get at work. Don’t mind the criticism. Remember that you are doing this to keep your baby healthy and not to benefit anyone else.
