Knowing When to Stop: Tips on How to Wean your Baby from Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding has many benefits that it can give both to the mother and child but there will come a time when you have to stop breastfeeding your baby.

Usually when babies get used to being breastfed, it’s hard for them to be introduced and get used to another habit. As a mother, if you feel like the time has come for them to stop breastfeeding; you can introduce other feeding techniques slowly at first. You can do this by switching from breastfeeding to cup or bottle feeding from time to time. In this case, the change is not too sudden and it gives the child a chance to get used to the new technique that you are introducing to him. Do this for a couple of weeks and when you feel that your baby will not have any more problems with the new feeding technique that you are using then it’s the right time to stop with breastfeeding.

Another way that you can go through the weaning process is to schedule a different activity when it comes to breastfeeding time. Humans have the tendency to identify the time depending on what they are usually doing during that specific time and the same practice can be applied to babies. If you want to stop breastfeeding, you can switch your breastfeeding time to play time or a fun activity time so your baby will not have a hard time adjusting to the new schedule.

When babies are at a stage where they will have to stop breastfeeding, they have the tendency to pick up habits and mannerisms that are similar to the breastfeeding action. Some of these habits include thumb sucking or carrying a toy around with them. Do not attempt to stop your child from doing this. Remember that this is their own special way of dealing with the change that they are presented upon.
