Breast Pumps: How to Use and Buying Guide for New Mothers

There are so many things an expectant or new mom must think about and prepare for that sometimes a breast pump is not high on her list. Although there are definitely more pressing issues like a crib or bassinette, a new mom who plans to forego formula and instead breast feed her child needs to think about a breast pump. There will be times when you produce too much milk that can be stored for later, or when you will be out in public when you need to pump, with or without your baby.

If you have not yet considered which brand or model to buy, then you have a lot of work to do. There are literally dozens of models amongst the major brands (which include Medela, Playtex, Ameda, Avent and more) that all fit specific needs. There is an overwhelming amount of choices, which is why breast pump ratings are so handy.

When writing their breast pump ratings, most reviewers look at several things. The biggest thing is comfort. Does the breast shield feel comfortable? Does the breast shield fit correctly or is it ill-fitting for some new moms? If you are uncomfortable while you are pumping, not only will you dread it, but there is a good chance you will produce less milk, which is unacceptable as your child grows and demands more food. One must also consider whether the pump is a single or a double. Double pumps allow for faster pumping of both breasts at the same time, but may be uncomfortable to some.

Also under consideration for breast pump ratings is whether the pump is manual or electric. Manual pumps are harder to use at first, but easy once you get used to them. They are also more lightweight than their electric counterparts, which must carry the weight of the batteries and battery pack. However, the electric pumps are much more convenient and wont fatigue your hands and arms because of manual pumping.

When giving breast pump ratings, one should also consider the size of the pump. Some models are very small and can fit inside a large purse or briefcase with ease. Other breast pumps are much larger and too heavy to fit inside anything smaller than a tote bag. Breast pump ratings consider the use and convenience of a pump when determining if the size is justifiable or not.

Accessories are another component of breast pump models that must be taken under consideration when deciding up on breast pump ratings. Accessories include everything from the bag that comes with the pump (if any) to extra bottles and all points in between. These extra accessories could save you money, even if the cost of the pump package is a little higher due to their inclusion. For example, if a package could include four bottles instead of two. But since a pack of bottles that size that would fit your breast pump would cost quite a bit sold separately, it may be in your best interest to go ahead and pay a little extra for that package—it could pay off in the long run.

Other accessories to look for when considering breast pump ratings are nipples, carrying bag, A/C adaptor, battery pack, if batteries are included and of course,  you should always consider the warranty of anything that is electric in nature.
